A Method Within the Madness
Lown Academy extends many of the ideas explored in Tea Drunk Ramblings into practical learning environments. Workshops, courses, and longer-term programs are used to organize and explore these ideas through direct, guided learning in real-time, rather than independent study. While some offerings are clinician-specific, most are accessible to a general audience, with sessions primarily conducted live online and select in-person events.
The material spans a continuum from classical medical and philosophical texts such as the Huangdi Neijing, to modern frameworks in anatomy, physiology, and movement science. It also includes practical systems of cultivation such as Taiji Quan, Qigong, Neidan, and Zhan Zhuang, which may take the form of either movement or stillness but all share a common emphasis on internal regulation and development. In some cases these are presented distinctly; in others, they are bridged or translated across contexts.
The focus is on building practical understanding in areas such as:
Recognizing and working with natural biological rhythms (daily, seasonal, and life-stage cycles)
Using movement as a tool for regulation, adaptation, and physical rehabilitation rather than just performance
Identifying and correcting patterns of excess, depletion, and misalignment in modern living
Developing internal awareness of states such as tension, fatigue, and coherence
Applying classical principles in direct, practical ways
Engaging with systems such as Taiji Quan and Neidan as methods of personal cultivation but also as practical and functional tools for adaptation
Interpreting and applying modern anatomical and physiological frameworks where appropriate
Maintaining stability and autonomy within modern environmental and social conditions
Across all offerings, the emphasis remains on material that can be applied in real conditions, whether clinically or within one’s own development.
